GENRE

Salah satu materi  pelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang penting bagi siswa SMP/MTs adalah kinds of text.
Ada 5 jenis teks yang perlu dipelajari: Narrative, Recount, Procedure, Descriptive dan Report
1.     Narrative
Berbentuk cerita /dongeng
Terdapat peristiwa rumit/masalah dan langkah yang diambil untuk memecahkan masalah itu
Missal:tale, folklore, legend, fable
Menggunakan  Simple Past Tense
Goal/Tujuan: to entertain(menghibur)
Generic Structure (susunan teks);
a.     Orientation:pendahuluan yang berupa pengenalan tokoh, tempat, waktu
Who, Where, When
b.     Complication?crisis: Pemunculan masalah
c.      Resolution: pemecahan/penyelesaian masalah
d.     Reorientation:penutup berisi ungkapan yang menunjukkan bahwa cerita sudah berakhir
e.     Coda;Perubahan yang terjadi pada tokoh dan pelajaran yang dapat diambil dari cerita
(Reorienttion dan Coda bersifat optional /boleh ada , boleh tidak)
Example:
Orientation:
Long, long time ago, there lived a beautiful girl named Cinderella. Because her parents passed away , she lived with her step mother and step sister. Cinderella was very sad everyday because she had to do the housework alone.
Complication:
One day, the king wantd to find the wife for his son. He invited the beautiful girls to come. Cinderella was very sad because her step sister did not let her go. Her sister went to the palace without Cinderella.
Resolution:
Luckily, The Angel came and helped Cinderella to go to the palace. In te palace, Cinderella danced with the prince. He fell in love with her; then he married her. They lived happily ever after.

2.     Recount
Jenis teks tentang pengalaman, kejadian, atau peristiwa seseorang
Menggunakan Simple Past Tense
Goal/tujuan: to retell9menceritakan) peristiwa yang telah terjadi pada seseorang
Generic structure;
a.     Orientation: pengenalan pelaku, dimana kejadian berlangsung, dan kapan terjadinya
(who, where, when)
b.     Events: rangkaian peristiwa yang terjadi pada tokoh/pelaku
c.      Reorientation:penutup yang biasanya diikuti komentar si pelaku/tokoh tentang kejadian yang dialaminya
Example:
Orientation:
Last month, Rahmat and his girl friend went to ancol. The went to Ancol to see the sea World and swim in Gelanggang Samudera
Event:
They went at 9.am. from their house by taxi. On the way they bought aqua and snack at Indomaret.
In Ancol , first they went to the Sea World. There were many kinds of fish they saw. They were sometime afraid of seeing very big fish.
Afer that, they swam in Gelanggang Samudera. They were very happy swimming while making a joke. A t 4 o’clock, they went home.
Reorientation:
The trip was tiring, but Rahmat and his girl friend enjoyed the trip very much.

3.     Descriptive
Jenis teks yang mendiskripsikan orang, benda atau binatang secara spesifik
Menggunakan Simple Present Tense
Goal/Tujuan: to describe something/someone specially (untuk mendiscripsikan sesuatu/seseorang secara spesifik)
Generic Structure:
a.     General classification/identification:pendahuluan tentang apa/siapa yang akan didiskripsikan
b.     Description: Deskripsi dari benda/orang tersebut
Example:
Identification:
I have a pet. It is a dog, and I call it Brownie.
Description:
Brownie is a Chinese breed. It is small, fluffy and cute. It has got thick brown fur. When  cuddle it, the fur feels soft. Brownie does not like bones.
Everyday, it eats soft food like steamed rice, fish or bread. Every morning, I give her milk and bread. When I am at school Brownie plays with my cat. They get a long well and never fight. May be because Brownie does not bark a lot. It treats the other animals in our house gently. Brownie is really a sweet and friendly animal.

4.     Report
Membahas tentang penelaahan pengamatan hasil studi
Menjelaskan benda/binatang secara umum(general)
Menggunakan Simple present tense
Goal/Tujuan: menggambarkan participant apa adanya secara umum(general)
Generic structure:
a.     General classification: Pernyatan umum tentangbenda/binatng trsebut
b.     Description: descripsi dari benda/binatang tersebutl
Example:

General classification:
The largest meat-eating animal in the world is the brown bear that lives in Alaska, America. Brownie will keep away from people, but when it is angry the brown bear can outfight a tiger, so don’t ever try to wound the mother or the cub.
Description:
A grown brownie may be up to 10 feet tall. It weight about 800 kilograms. When it was born , it weighs only about a half kilo. The paw is very sharp so that it can kill if it hurts us.
5.     Procedure
Teks tentang cara/langkah untuk melakukan sesuatu
Menggunakan kalimat perintah
Examples: First, open the door. Then, walk into the house
Goal/tujuan: Menerangkan bagaimana melakukan sesuatu
General Structure:
a.     Aim/goal: Tujuan melakukan kegitan
b.     Materials: bahan bahan yang dibutuhkan
c.      Steps: Cara/langkah melakukan sesuatu
Example:
How to Use Oxygen Mask
Things you need: Oxygen mask
Steps:
1.     First, pull down the mask
2.     The oxygen mask will automatically fall from the unit above your head
3.     Patents should ajust their own mask first, then help their children
4.     Secure the mask by adjusting the strap around your head
5.     Place it firmly over your mouth and nose
